How do we deal with camera snobs? You know who I’m talking about, the nerdy looking folks who walk around with DSLR cameras and a foot long baseball bat lens to shoot baby pictures. If they see you with a camera that’s not what they think is good enough they’ll approach and ask what you’re shooting with, just so they can brag on their gear and put down yours. I’m ready for these people because it’s not the camera that takes good pictures, it’s the photographer’s skill and experience.
I used to sit by and listen to “experts” claim things like, “You can’t get good pictures with a pocket digital camera”. I’d show them a dozen photos of mine and ask them what camera I used. Afterward I’d prove it was a pocket digital that took the shots and watch their mouth fall open as they kept repeating, “No Way”! It seems as soon as somebody buys their first decent digital camera they get all wise. I will sometimes ask to see their camera and notice everything is set to full Automatic Mode. I thank them and just walk away, chuckling. Camera snobs are to be pitied, not taken seriously.
We “artists” we are a funny lot.
The best part of camera snobs is how often they are lousy photographers. I have a friend who has $5000 worth of camera, not counting lenses … and she too shoots entirely in iAuto. She doesn’t know an f/stop from her elbow. There’s an Israeli saying which goes “God give nuts to people who have no teeth.” I don’t deal with the snobs. I just smile and take pictures. Arguing with fools is a no-win.
I like your new format!
Thank you.
