When you were a kid did you ever dream about what life would be like when you grew up? Did you want to be an astronaut or a fireman or Superman? I know I did. I had all kinds of ambition and dreams of what it would be like to have my own place, car, adult toys. As Dr. Phil would say, “How’s that working for you”?
I see and photograph people in their daily lives that don’t seem like they’ve reached their potential. They don’t seem to have fulfilled their dreams. If your job is getting you down I’m here to tell you now that it doesn’t get any better when you suddenly get old, decrepit and can barely walk anymore. All you’ve got when you’re old are memories and time. Do you remember that 9-5, Monday-Friday job you worked so many years? Do you remember how you dreamed of the next weekend you got off and what you would do with all that free time? When you get to my age and have retired for a few years it dawns on you that suddenly you have to find something to entertain you 24/7. Everyday is a holiday and every weekend is a 3 day holiday.
Do you have lots of friends, money, hobbies? Have you traveled to all the places you dreamt about during your 9-5 job? Have you discovered how boring living in an RV, driving a car in traffic along a coastal highway or putting hundreds of miles a day on your motorcycle?
Life deals each of us a different hand to play. Happiness is not about money, fame, power. It’s about fulfillment, joy, friends, family, continued accomplishment. It’s about paying it forward, sharing what you know with others so that they are better equipped to play the hand life has dealt them.
Try it, it works for me and I have nothing by the world’s standards. 🙂
