The Tortoise & The Hare

The Tortoise and the Hare is one of Aesop’s Fables. In full disclosure the two photos I used might contain one photo that sort of looks like a hare but is actually a Patagonian Cavy. 🙂 The other photo is indeed a tortoise. Both were taken as the Southwick Zoo in Mendon, MA.

The Patagonian mara, is a relatively large rodent in the mara genus (Dolichotis). It is also known as the Patagonian cavy, Patagonian hare or dillaby. This herbivorous, somewhat rabbit-like animal is found in open and semi-open habitats in Argentina, including large parts of Patagonia. It is monogamous, but often breeds in warrens that are shared by several pairs.

  1. You are sure getting great pictures. Also glad the zoo has some animals I have never heard of or even seen so you can share. Wondering where they have the animals in the winter when closed?
