During a zoo visit to the Southwick Zoo yesterday I noticed the grounds crew were quite busy planting dozens of Iris all over the property. While not quite as sophisticated as the much older Oregon Zoo, with their entire staff of botanists and huge staff of grounds crew, the Southwick Zoo workers were doing the best to make their zoo more beautiful for the visitors on hand.
Though not an expert on flowers I quickly recognized the local iris varieties at the Southwick Zoo and made sure to capture their beauty. We also have the bearded variety at my Calumet Court senior housing community thanks to Al, my next door neighbor. Back in Portland April and May were the seasonal months for Iris to come up in all their glory. The neighborhood where I lived in Portland had bearded Iris everywhere, as did the Oregon Zoo.
Below are samples of the Southwick Zoo’s Iris offerings.
